If your computer shuts down while tracking
What happens to a running timer when your computer sleeps, shuts down or you walk away, and how to check an entry marked "Check this entry".
A timer should only count time you worked. When your computer sleeps, shuts down, loses power or you close the browser, Invollo stops counting at your last activity instead of letting the timer run on for hours. The web app, the Chrome extension and the desktop tracker all work the same way and stay in sync.
How Invollo knows the timer is still in use
- While a timer runs, the app, the extension or the desktop tracker tells Invollo once a minute that it is still open. Screenshots and pausing or resuming count as activity too.
- If nothing has been heard from any of them for 30 minutes, Invollo stops the timer at its last activity, marks the entry "Check this entry" and sends you a notification.
- A paused timer is never stopped this way.
When you come back
If you open Invollo (or wake your computer) and the timer was left running with no activity for more than 10 minutes, you see "Your timer on <project> was still running. Last activity: <time>". Choose one:
- Stop at last activity (recommended): the entry ends when you were last active, so the hours the computer was off are not counted.
- Keep the time: the timer keeps running and all the time counts. Use it if you really were working, for example on a call.
- Discard the entry: the entry is deleted and none of its time is recorded.
If you press Stop on a timer that had no activity for more than 10 minutes, Invollo asks first whether to stop at your last activity or keep all the time. It never closes the timer at "now" without asking.
Idle time and a locked screen (browser extension and desktop tracker)
- When your screen locks, the timer pauses. Resume it when you are back at work.
- After 10 minutes without using the keyboard or mouse you are asked "Were you working?": discard the idle time and keep running, stop at the time you went idle, or keep the time.
- The extension only learns whether the computer is active, idle or locked. It never reads your keys or pages for this.
Entries marked "Check this entry"
An entry is marked "Check this entry" when Invollo stopped it automatically, or when a tracked session ran for more than 12 hours. You find these entries at the top of the Time Tracker and in your time logs, with a short reason. Choose one:
- Looks right: the hours are correct; the mark goes away.
- Trim to last screenshot: the entry ends one screenshot interval after its last screenshot (shown only when the entry has screenshots).
- Edit times: set the start and end yourself. Saving counts as checked.
